Division 1-5 Formats Explained

posted by Jacob Hancox,
The 2022 season of the NLC is starting soon, and there are plenty of new format changes for this year. Here is a little explainer to help you wrap your head around the fresh divisions system for the NLC.

Division 1

The Division 1 regular season will consist of 10 teams, which will face-off against each other in a double round robin best-of-1 format. The top 6 teams at the end of both the spring and summer regular seasons will advance to the play-offs for the chance to win the NLC Division 1 title.

At the end of each split, teams will be allocated Championship Points based on their final rank. For the teams which advanced to the play-offs, this final rank will be determined by their play-off results. For the teams which did not advance to the play-offs, their final rank will be determined by their regular season results.

Championship points for the division will be allocated as follows:

The bottom two teams in terms of championship points come the end of the summer split will have to play in the promotion/relegation tournament against the top two teams from Division 2. The winners of this tournament will have a spot in the following Division 1 season, while the losers will be relegated to Division 2.

The spring split regular season of Division 1 will kick-off on the 10th of January 2022 and will finish on the 9th of March 2022. It will be followed by the spring split play-offs which will run from the 14th until the 30th of March

Division 2

Much like Division 1, Division 2 will feature 10 teams playing each other in a double round robin best-of-1 format. The top 6 teams at the end of both the spring and summer regular seasons will advance to the play-off stage.

At the end of the Division 1 summer split, the two highest placed Division 2 teams on championship points will fight for their chance to be promoted to Division 1 against the two lowest ranked teams from the top division.

Championship points for this division will be allocated as they are in Division 1.

The bottom two teams in Division 2 at the end of both the spring and summer regular seasons will have to play in the promotion/relegation tournament to determine whether they will lose their places in Division 2 to the highest ranked Division 3 teams.

The spring split regular season of Division 2 will begin on the 25th of January 2022 and will finish on the 24th of March 2022. This will be followed by the spring split play-offs which will run from the 5th until the 21st of April.

The promotion/relegation tournament between Division 2 and Division 3 will run from the 26th of April until the 5th of May.

Divisions 3-5

Divisions 3-5 are split up into multiple groups, with every group featuring up to eight teams. These teams play each other in series of two games each (I. E. best-of-2) over seven total match days. There will be three splits: the spring, summer and winter split, as opposed to the two splits per year for the higher divisions.

Depending on their final rank in their group, teams will either have the opportunity for promotion to the next higher division, will stay in their division, or will face relegation based on their finishing position within the Division. The promotion/relegation tournaments for teams in Divisions 3-5 are also considered to be the play-offs for those divisions. Teams in Division 5 cannot be relegated below this point.

To participate in Divisions 3-5, teams will need to sign up during the Registration Phase, which begins on the 14th of January 2022. All teams will have the option to participate in the Calibration Phase, which will help sort teams into appropriate divisions based on their skill levels. No team can be placed higher than Division 3 in the Calibration Phase. Any teams which, for whatever reason, do not participate in the Calibration Phase after signing up will be placed in the Starter Division.

The Starter Division will be played in the Swiss-Format, you can find out more about it here.

The spring split regular season for the lower Divisions will run from the 14th of February 2022 until the 10th of April 2022. This will be followed by the promotion/relegation tournaments. The promotion/relegation tournament between Division 2 and Division 3 will run from the 26th of April until the 5th of May, while the promotion/relegation tournaments between Divisions 3, 4 and 5 will run from the 23rd until the 25th of April.
